What does it mean when we say "animal-safe" and what steps were taken to get there?
Well, to start, we are completely against the testing of live animals, so that added a hurdle right out of the gate! How can you test materials without exposing them to animals? For us, it was a combination of science, chemical engineering, and common sense!
The first step was developing materials that would function in extreme environments and outperform any currently available products on the market. What good are non-toxic materials if they wouldn't withstand their intended application? We worked tirelessly to find the perfect ratios and mixtures that could perform, but also be tested as finished animal-safe products.
One of the main reasons products are not animal-safe is obviously chemical composition. We designed all our products to be No-VOC and nontoxic. Once we were satisfied with the performance and chemical properties of our products, we could then put them through a series of tests. Our products were then exposed to heat, water, chemicals, machining and abrasion testing. Tests were taken before, during and after to ensure the parameters were unaffected.
Another huge component that many fail to consider, is that if the materials you choose release any particles or debris, whether they are nontoxic or not, ingestion or impaction can be lethal. That's why we challenged ourselves to make our products "indestructible". No peeling paint, cracked epoxy, foul smells or toxic dust here!
Finally, we decided to test the animals' habitats and see if any parameters were affects upon the introduction of our products. Once all the checkboxes were marked, we finally added the live animals and continued to monitor for any change in environment, health, or behavior.
